Title: Putting sentences in order and learning the names of animals
Materials: The text book: What do you do with the tail like this?
Pen/pencils
Discussion:
It is really important to teach the students grammar and putting sentences in the right order, including subject+verb agreement, articles, adjectives, and so forth. Students should be able to produce grammatically correct sentences and know where and how to use article and other parts of speech. I think if teachers teach in this way, this kind of activity might help students to improve their writing, thinking skills as well as improve their vocabulary.
According to TEKS:
Writing/grammar/usage. The student composes meaningful texts applying knowledge of grammar and usage. The student is expected to:
Use correct irregular plurals such as sheep (3);
Use singular and plural forms of regular nouns and adjust verbs for agreement (3);
Compose elaborated sentences in written texts and use the appropriate end punctuation (3);
Compose sentences with interesting, elaborated subjects (2-3); and
Edit writing toward standard grammar and usage, including subject-verb agreement; pronoun agreement, including pronouns that agree in number; and appropriate verb tenses, including to be, in final drafts (2-3).
How to teach it:
First of all, I will show the part of the book where the questions are given with the animals’ parts of body. And then I will ask them to guess what animal that might be. I will point to the body parts of the animals. Students will guess. Then I will ask them to write down the name of the animals they think by looking at the parts of body. Then I will ask them to write down how animals can use their parts of body for example, their ears, noses, legs and so on. Once they write down the sentences I will ask what they have written and ask them to read their sentences. After this I show them the next page in the book and read to them what animals can do with their noses, ears etc. so, the class continues in the same manner till we go through the book. From time to time I will suggest the words they might need in order to construct their sentences. At the end of the class I will ask the students what they have written and check their work and help them to correct their sentences and put parts of speech in order.
