Materials:
Book: La Mariposa
Papers/ pencils
Discussion:
According to TEKS students in grade three read and write more independently than in any prevous grade and spend significant time engaged in reading and writing on their own as well as in assigned tasks and projects. Therefore, I think students at this grade meed more practice in writing, because writing is one of the skills that is difficult to master. Letting the students to write on their own by looking at the illustrations, or constructing stories according to illustrations, I think would be helpful for them to horn their writing skills.
How to teach it:
The TEKS states the following: Writing/purposes. The student writes for a variety of audiences and purposes and in various forms. The student is expected to:
(A) write to record ideas and reflections (K-3);
(B) write to discover, develop, and refine ideas (1-3);
(C) write to communicate with a variety of audiences (1-3); and
(D) write in different forms for different purposes such as lists to record, letters to invite or thank, and stories or poems to entertain (1-3).
According to the statement mentioned above I will conduct my lesson in the following way:
Today we are going to be writers. By looking at the pictures in La Mariposa you will write a story. I will divide the students into groups of two or three. I will ask them to look at the pictures and think of what kind of story they can construct based on the illustrations. Once the students finish writing the story I will ask them to exchange their papers with other groups and evaluate their writing based on the sentence construction, grammar mistakes and so forth. After this, I will ask each group to read aloud their stories to the whole class and turn them in.
